Skin Removal after Weight Loss

Are you struggling with bothersome excess skin and fat that seems to be unaffected by your strenuous attempts to exercise and diet? After substantial weight loss, whether it is from diet and exercise or from an alternative weight loss surgery, some patients are left with large amounts of hanging skin. This stretched skin has lost its elasticity and is unable to natural conform back to its original orientation. Patients that have struggled with this condition have trusted Dr. Stoker to perform their skin removal surgery, also known as a panniculectomy.

If you are ready to show off your lean figure that is hiding under the excess skin, then you can call Dr. Stoker’s office at 310-300-1779, or request a consultation online.

What is a Panniculectomy?
The skin removal procedure also known as a panniculectomy removes excess skin that is typically left behind after a massive weight loss. After a formerly obese person has improved their overall health with weight loss, they are still left with the problem of excess skin that can cause health issues of their own. The lower stomach is often times the most affected with hanging skin below the belt line. This is called the pannus. Moisture can get caught in this excess skin leading to skin ulcers, rashes, odor and the problem of finding comfortable clothing. This procedure is done on an inpatient basis and can take up to 3-5 hours depending on if it is combined with other surgeries.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Panniculectomy?
Typically, the best candidates are those that have lost a large amount of weight and are having negative side effects from the excess skin, or are unhappy with the appearance of their bodies drooping skin. Patients should also be at a stable goal weight for at least 6 months before the procedure. Major fluctuations in weight can cause for the procedures results to become compromised. You can be considered a good candidate if:

  • You have lost 50 lbs. or more
  • You are prepared to maintain a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise
  • You have realistic expectations for the procedure
  • You are in good general health

What problems can be caused by excess skin?
Patients that struggle with excess skin after weight loss may have difficulties in everyday life. Some of the difficulties that patients may face prior to the skin removal surgery may include:

  • Standing and walking straight up and down
  • Getting in and out of bed
  • Finding clothes that are comfortable and fit appropriately
  • Recurrent skin rashes
  • Non-Healing ulcers
  • Other skin infections

What to Expect after Skin removal Surgery?
After having skin removal surgery, patients will see a noticeable difference in the shape of their body very soon after surgery. Seeing the firmer, flatter abdominal region that was underneath the excess skin will help patients become more confident about their bodies. After the first few months, the incision line will continually fade. The procedure also offers long lasting results. However, if there are major weight fluctuations, the results may become compromised.

If you think that skin removal surgery after weight loss is right for you, then call Dr. Stoker’s office at 310-300-1779, or request a consultation online.
